Common Breastfeeding Problems and how to Address Them

Problem #1: The baby doesn’t latch on properly
Solution: Let the baby feel your skin. Remove clothes from your waist up and get your baby on your chest. When it’ll feel ready, it will latch on automatically.
Problem #2: The baby nurses frequently
Solution: That’s normal behavior. Babies digest breast milk in 1.5 to 2 hours. And they require the nutrients to make proper growth.
Problem #3: The baby is gulping and gets fussy
Solution: Try switching the sides. Sometimes the milk flow becomes too strong for the baby. Switch between your breasts every 2 or 3 minutes.
Problem #4: I have cracked nipples
Solution: Moisten your nipples with breast milk after every session of breastfeeding. Increase the frequency of your breastfeeding sessions as well.
Problem #5: My boobs are swollen
Solution: Use hand-expression to get rid of the discomfort. If the swelling is because of intravenous fluid, try tucking in some cabbage leaves in your bra between feedings.
Problem#6: I have a low milk supply
Solution: Increase the frequency of your breastfeeding sessions. Try using a breast pump as it’ll pull more fluid.
Problem#7: I have a tender area in my breast
Solution: Apply heat on your breasts between feedings. Try to get the milk flowing in that area. Massage the spot during nursing.
